How to Turn Focused Inbox On or Off in Microsoft Outlook

Category: Microsoft 365
Applies to: Windows 10/11, macOS, Outlook on the Web, iPhone, iPad, and Android
Difficulty: Beginner
Estimated Time: 1–2 minutes

Overview

Microsoft Outlook includes a feature called Focused Inbox that automatically separates your incoming emails into two tabs: Focused and Other. While this feature is designed to help you prioritize important messages, it can sometimes make emails appear to be missing when they have simply been placed in the Other tab. This guide explains how to turn Focused Inbox on or off in Microsoft Outlook so you can choose whether your emails appear in one combined Inbox or are separated into two tabs.

Before You Begin:

  • Make sure you are signed into your Microsoft 365 work email account.
  • Confirm that your device is connected to the internet.
  • Open Microsoft Outlook or Outlook on the Web.

Note: Disabling Focused Inbox does not delete or move your emails. It simply changes how messages are displayed in your Inbox.

What Is Focused Inbox?

When Focused Inbox is enabled, Microsoft Outlook automatically organizes your Inbox into two sections.
Focused: Contains emails that Outlook considers more important, based on your email activity and interactions.
Other: Contains emails that Outlook considers less important, including some automated notifications, newsletters, and other messages.
When Focused Inbox Is Disabled:
– Your Inbox displays messages together in a single list.
– The Focused and Other tabs disappear.
– Incoming emails are no longer separated into these two categories.
– Existing emails remain in your mailbox.
Recommendation: If you frequently have difficulty locating emails because they appear under the Other tab, disabling Focused Inbox may make your Inbox easier to manage.
