Installing ScreenConnect on Linux

Category: Remote Support
Applies to: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and compatible Linux distributions
Difficulty: Intermediate
Estimated Time: 5–10 minutes

Overview

True Synergy Networks uses ScreenConnect, a secure remote support application, to assist customers with technical issues. This guide explains how to download, install, and configure ScreenConnect on your Linux computer so a True Synergy Networks support technician can provide remote assistance. Unlike Windows and macOS, Linux installations may require commands to be entered into the Terminal. The installation process will vary depending on your Linux distribution.

Step 1: Download ScreenConnect

  1. Select the appropriate installation package for your Linux distribution:
  2. Once the file has finished downloading, proceed to Step 2.

Important Security Notice: Only download the True Synergy Networks ScreenConnect installer through tsnhelp.us or an authorized download link provided on that website. If anyone directs you to download our ScreenConnect software from another website, contact True Synergy Networks before proceeding.

Step 2: Locate the Downloaded Installer

After downloading ScreenConnect, locate the installation file on your computer.

Open the Downloads Folder

  1. Open your Linux system’s File Manager.
  2. Navigate to the Downloads folder.
  3. Locate the ScreenConnect installation file, typically named:
    • ScreenConnect.ClientSetup.deb
    • ScreenConnect.ClientSetup.rpm
  4. Confirm that the downloaded file matches your Linux distribution.

Note: Some browsers may modify the downloaded filename. If your file has a different name, use the actual filename when following the installation commands below.

Step 3: Install ScreenConnect

The installation process depends on your Linux distribution. Follow the instructions that apply to your computer.

Option A: Ubuntu, Debian, or Linux Mint

If your computer uses Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, or another Debian-based distribution:

  1. Open the Terminal application. On many distributions, press Ctrl + Alt + T.
  2. Navigate to your Downloads folder by entering:cd ~/Downloads
  3. Enter the following command to install ScreenConnect:sudo apt install ./ScreenConnect.ClientSetup.deb
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Enter your Linux administrator password if prompted.
  6. If asked to confirm the installation, type Y and press Enter.
  7. Wait for the installation to finish.

Note: Your password may not appear on the screen while typing. This is normal behavior in Linux.

Option B: Fedora, Red Hat, Rocky Linux, or AlmaLinux

If your computer uses Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, or another compatible RPM-based distribution:

  1. Open the Terminal application.
  2. Navigate to your Downloads folder by entering:cd ~/Downloads
  3. Enter the following command to install ScreenConnect:sudo dnf install ./ScreenConnect.ClientSetup.rpm
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Enter your Linux administrator password if prompted.
  6. If asked to confirm the installation, type Y and press Enter.
  7. Wait for the installation to finish.

Note: Some older Linux distributions may use yum instead of dnf. Contact True Synergy Networks if the installation command is not recognized.

Verify Java Is Installed

Some ScreenConnect Linux clients require Java to operate correctly.

  1. Open the Terminal application.
  2. Enter the following command:java -version
  3. Press Enter.
  4. If Java is installed, the Terminal will display its version information.
  5. If Java is not installed, contact your True Synergy Networks support technician for assistance installing a compatible Java runtime.

Why is this needed? Java is required by certain ScreenConnect Linux client components. Without a compatible Java runtime, the application may fail to launch or connect properly.

Step 4: Verify the Installation

Once ScreenConnect has been installed, your computer should be ready for remote assistance.

Confirm the Remote Connection

  1. Ensure your computer is connected to the internet.
  2. Allow ScreenConnect to complete its initial startup.
  3. Your True Synergy Networks support technician will verify that your computer appears in the remote support system.
  4. If your Linux desktop displays a screen-sharing or remote-control permission request, review it and approve it only for a support session you recognize.
  5. Your technician will verify that screen viewing and remote control are functioning correctly.

Note: Depending on your Linux distribution and desktop environment, ScreenConnect may run in the background without displaying a separate application window.

Linux Display Compatibility

Some Linux systems use a display protocol called Wayland, which may limit remote screen viewing or control functionality.

If your technician encounters a black screen or is unable to control your desktop, additional configuration may be required.

Note: Do not change your Linux display server, disable security settings, or modify system configuration unless instructed by your authorized True Synergy Networks support technician.
